Description
Vintage Anthony Atkinson relief etching, removed from a disbound Publication.
An illustration 'View From the Embankment', by Anthony Atkinson, published by W. S. Cowell Ltd for the 1956 first edition of 'A Handbook of Type and Illustration' by John Lewis. The artist created a line drawing on grained plastocowell*. The plasocowell sheet is then reversed to negative by the block maker and printed down on to a light sensitive copper or zinc plate and etched in the normal way as for photo engraving. For this image the artist drew separations for five different printings.
Plasocowell is a process that has been developed by W.S. Cowell Ltd to improve on the transfer process. Instead of drawing on lithographic stones or plates, the artist draws (the reverse way round) on a transparent sheet of plastic, grained like a lithographic plate. The advantages are that any opaque material, chalk, pencil, ink, etc. may be used, for the sheets of plastic are not transferred, but are used in the same way as a photographic positive would be.
On the reverse side is printed text, and a small copper plate etching by Neville Adams, that does not show through.
CONDITION: The sheet is in very good condition having been kept bound in the book and removed only for photographing. The sheet may have feint handling marks from page turning. The colours of the image are unfaded.
DIMENSIONS: Size of page: 21.5 x 13.8cm (8 1⁄2" x 5 1⁄2")
Size of printed area: 17 x 13cm (6 5⁄8" x 5 3⁄16").
