Antique 1920 Beyond the Desert Alfred Noyes First Edition Frederick Stokes Death Valley Novel Acres of Books

A 1920 first edition of "Beyond the Desert," Alfred Noyes' novel of Death Valley and the American West, published by Frederick A. Stokes Company (copyright jointly held with The Red Book Corporation, where it first ran serialized). Bound in sage-green cloth with a printed paper title label on both the front board and spine reading "Beyond the Desert / Alfred Noyes" — a publisher's label-binding style typical of the era. A nice piece of bookstore history is tucked inside: the rear pastedown carries the label of Bertrand Smith's "Acres of Books," the legendary Cincinnati (and later Long Beach) used bookstore that became one of the most famous secondhand bookshops in America before its closure — along with a faint pencil price history ($1.00, later marked down). A charming trace of the book's own well-traveled past. Condition: a small chip/nick at the spine head, light foxing/tanning to the front label and edges consistent with age, corners lightly bumped. No dust jacket. Interior pages are clean and tight throughout. From the Chapter & Vintage collection — old things, new chapters. Carefully packed and shipped with full insurance.
