A striking pair of heavy, thick-walled Japanese pottery/ ceramic cylinder vases, late Meiji–Taisho period (c. 1890–1920).
Each vase is cylindrical with a slightly flared rim and applied mask-and-ring handles. Additional applied floral medallions sit at the shoulder and near the base.
Antique Japanese pair of heavy cylinder vases. Red mark 日光山 深川製. Thick white earthenware or semi-porcelain (does not ring; chip shows hard white chalky paste). Imari-palette enamel, samurai and bijin panels, phoenix and flowers, applied ring handles. Late 19th–early 20th century export style. Not thin Arita porcelain.
Japanese export, late Meiji to Taisho or a bit later
Workshop using 日光山 深川製 as a trade mark
Heavy white earthenware / semi-porcelain (no ring, chalky white chip)
Rich Imari palette (iron-red, cobalt, turquoise, pink, yellow, green and gilt):
Front cartouches: standing samurai in armor pointing toward pine and wisteria, with a seated beauty in a pink kimono below. Red-and-gilt Greek-key frames.
Reverse: ho-o (phoenix) birds among large peonies and chrysanthemums.
Dense floral and brocade grounds.
Lower band: iron-red with fan-shaped landscape/wave reserves and gilt floral bosses.
Dimensions (each): 10.75" high × 4.5" diameter. Weight: approximately 5lb each
Condition: Good antique condition. Light gilt wear, minor surface marks and typical firing specks.
White glazed interior; unglazed grit foot. Imari-palette enamel decoration.
The double mark 日光山 深川製 plus the Imari-style painting, applied handles points to late Meiji–Taisho export decorative ware: a Fukagawa / Arita name used on (or with) a thicker blank, decorated in a Nikkozan workshop style.
