Description

A striking matched pair of antique Nicol & Davidson “Imperial China” handled serving dishes, decorated in rich magenta, ivory and elaborate gold. Dating to the late 19th century, likely circa 1870s, these unusual dishes bear the distinctive Nicol & Davidson New York backstamp. Nicol & Davidson was associated with the prestigious New York china and decorative-goods trade during the Victorian period. Each small oval dish features a vivid magenta border surrounded by fine gilt bands, delicate geometric detailing and sweeping gold scrollwork across the integral handles. The combination is wonderfully dramatic — quintessential Victorian tableware with a surprisingly modern colour palette. Mark: Nicol & Davidson New York Imperial China Set includes: 2 matching handled serving dishes Measurements: Approximately 9” long × 5.5” wide each These would originally have been suitable for small table accompaniments such as relishes, pickles, sweets or other side dishes. Today they are equally beautiful as display pieces, vanity trays, small serving dishes or additions to a collection of Victorian tableware. Condition Good antique condition considering their considerable age. Both pieces show extensive fine crazing throughout the glaze, along with areas of age-related discolouration and spotting. There is expected wear and fading to portions of the gilded decoration and rims, along with other minor signs of use and age. Please examine photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description. No major chips or cracks noted. The crazing, softened gilding and patina are consistent with antique earthenware of this period and give the pair wonderful historic character.
