QAJAR CALLIGRAPHY | Ayat al-Kursi by Vesal of Shiraz, 19th Century — Instant Digital Download This extraordinary artwork is an artist-enhanced restoration of a calligraphy page by Muhammad Shafi' — known to history as Vesal of Shiraz — one of the most celebrated and technically inventive calligraphers of the Qajar period in Iran, from the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Vesal of Shiraz (1779–1846) descended from a line of scribes who served at the courts of the Safavid, Afshar, and Zand rulers of Iran. He was proficient in seven calligraphic scripts and is known to have copied over sixty complete Qur'ans in his lifetime — a staggering achievement that places him among the most prolific Qur'anic calligraphers in Islamic history. He specialised in revival naskhi in the tradition of the great late Safavid masters, and his pages are held in major museum collections around the world. This page is one of his most visually daring works. It contains excerpts from Surah Al-Baqarah — the Throne Verse (Ayat al-Kursi, 2:255) and the two verses that follow it — written in a composition of extraordinary complexity and colour. Eight diagonal lines of cream-coloured naskhi run across the black ground in one direction; between them, eight further lines are written in reverse, in pink, yellow, and blue inks, so that the reader must turn the page to read them. The two sets of lines interweave across the surface of the page in a composition that is simultaneously calligraphy, pattern, and conceptual art — the word of God written in every direction, filling the page with sacred text from every angle. The Qajar period was renowned for its calligraphers' willingness to push the boundaries of the tradition — writing in unprecedented colour combinations, on unusual backgrounds, in multidirectional compositions that challenged both the writer and the reader. Vesal of Shiraz was among the greatest masters of this tendency, and this page is among its finest expressions. The black ground with multicoloured calligraphy gives the print a visual power completely unlike anything else in the collection — it reads as contemporary abstract art, as Qajar manuscript art, and as sacred Islamic text simultaneously. The Throne Verse is among the most beloved passages in the entire Qur'an, recited daily by Muslims around the world, and its presence at the heart of this extraordinary visual composition gives the piece both its meaning and its depth. For best results: choose heavyweight matte or satin art paper — the multicoloured calligraphy on black looks most vivid on a matte surface. For museum quality: request giclee printing — pigment-based inks that keep colors vibrant for up to 200 years. For maximum drama: try canvas printing — the cream, pink, yellow, and blue calligraphy on black looks extraordinary on a woven surface at large format. For this palette: a warm gold frame or slim black frame are both ideal — gold adds warmth to the composition, black lets the calligraphy float in an unbroken dark field. 📥 ACCESSING YOUR FILES After purchase, go to: Etsy Profile → Purchases and Reviews → Download Guest buyers receive an automated email from Etsy with your download links. ⚖️ TERMS OF USE ✓ Personal use — print as many copies as you need ✓ Gift printed copies to friends and family ✗ No sharing or distributing digital files ✗ No commercial use or resale Questions before purchasing?
