Description
This superb haute couture vintage hat was designed by Jack McConnell, the master milliner himself! This hat has the famous and coveted RED FEATHER behind the designer label, which is adorned with a single rhinestone jewel, and the entire interior of this hat has GOLD LAME fabric and the headband is ivory and gold lace.
You know this is a very collectible, authentic, original, one-of-a-kind Jack McConnell creation because of this highly-sought-after red feather, ‘Styled by Jack McConnell, New York” label and gold lame interior. This is the opportunity to add this stunning hat designed by Jack McConnell to your collection.
This sensational creation is completely covered with oodles of light beige tulle, adorned with small feathers, some of which are adorned with rhinestones. The entire perimeter of the hat is lovely golden beige velvet. This same divine velvet was used to create a beautiful bow that adorns the back of the hat.
If you’ve watched “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” remember the party at Holly Golightly’s (Audrey Hepburn) apartment, and the hat worn by the model that walked in with two men? This hat reminds me of that scene in the movie.
Hats created by Jack McConnell are extremely collectible and are included in many museum exhibits. He is acclaimed as one of the most innovative and creative milliners of the 20th century. Hollywood stars such as Lana Turner, Joan Crawford, celebrities, and other stylish trend setters of the day sought out and worn these fashionable creations.
I found this hat at an estate sale in the hat box shown in the photos. The hat will come to you in this hat box. It is from Weinstock-Hale, ties closed with attached cloth ribbon, and measures 12 x 12 x 7.
Weinstock's, originally Weinstock, Lubin, and Co., was an American department store chain headquartered in Sacramento, California. It was founded by Harris Weinstock and his half-brother, David Lubin. The chain was purchased by Hale's in 1949, becoming part of Broadway-Hale Stores, later Carter Hawley Hale, which was later purchased by Federated Department Stores (now Macy's, Inc.) in 1995. Shortly after the purchase, most of the Weinstock's stores were converted to Macy's, while the remaining stores were either closed or sold.
This over-the-top, rare, unique hat would thrill any collector of vintage hats to add to her collection! It is an amazing piece of wearable art.
The hat will be shipped in the hat box shown in the photos. The hat and hat box will be in a larger box, and packed with the utmost care with protective packing material.
The attached label says: “STYLED BY JACK McCONNELL, NEW YORK” on the inside crown of the hat. As noted, it has the trademark red feather and rhinestone jewel with the label, and the gold lame cloth interior, and gold and ivory lace headband.
Measurement: It measures 22 inches in circumference, but it doesn’t really matter because this hat sits on top of the head.
I believe this hat is from either the early 1960s.
CONDITION: Very good to excellent vintage condition. Quality is excellent. It appears as if it was rarely worn because the interior gold and lace headband appear to be in pristine condition. The color is still rich and vibrant. The velvet headband hem and bow are in perfect condition. The only thing to note is that it appears that not all of the feathers are complete at this point, but this is the nature of these very delicate feathers and does not detract from the beauty of this hat. Please view the photos as they will give you the best idea of its overall condition.
