Description

This hand-tinted engraving from the February 6, 1861 edition of Harper's Weekly captures a moment of Civil War-era American history through both newsprint and later artisan coloring. The 9¾ by 5¼ inch image depicts the Interior of Fortress Monroe, Virginia, mounted on light linen cardstock with the original masthead visible—a tangible piece of nineteenth-century journalism and illustration. The newsprint has aged beautifully with only minor marks, offering collectors a genuine artifact from an pivotal period in American history.
