Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was the defining figure of Fauvism — a movement that replaced tonal modelling with pure, expressive colour. His final decade, spent largely bedridden, produced his celebrated papiers découpés: compositions cut entirely from painted paper, which he described as "drawing with scissors."
