Jamshid's Message on the Rock – Sufi Art, Eclectic Decor, Persian Miniature, Mystic Poetry

This Persian miniature from 17th-century Bukhara illustrates a scene from Saadi's *Bustan*, depicting the legendary king Jamshid pausing at a mountain spring to reflect on mortality and the transience of earthly power. Rendered in ink, colour, and gold on paper, the painting captures a moment of profound humility—Jamshid writes verses onto the rockface acknowledging that kings before him, despite their worldly dominion, could take nothing with them to the grave. The composition, with its elegant nastaliq script and illuminated borders, offers both aesthetic richness and spiritual substance, inviting quiet contemplation on themes central to Persian literature and Sufi thought.
