Description

The school book bag comes home with a sheet in it, and the sheet has a box for a level and no box for what she thought. Reading at home is ten minutes on a sofa with somebody who is tired. What is worth keeping from it is not a number — it is which book it was, who was listening, and the thing the child said on the page where the dog gets lost. That is the part that is gone by Thursday, and it is the part you will want in four years. ALOUD is 8 pages of plain, ruled paper for exactly that. The date, the book, the pages, and who sat and listened — with a line for what the child said about it and a line for what you noticed. Nothing in it is marked, levelled or scored. THE FOUR PAGES THAT PAY FOR IT Date, book, pages, who listened. Four columns and a pen. It takes eight seconds at the end of a chapter, which is the only reason it ever gets done. A line for the child, and a line for the adult. What they said about it, in their words, and what you noticed, in yours. Neither is an assessment of anything. Books finished, kept as a list. Started, finished, read alone or together, and whether it was asked for again. A year of that list is a real record of a reader. Nothing graded, levelled or scored. No level, no band, no colour, no scheme and no target. The school has all of those and they differ. This is the family's own book. WHAT IS INSIDE One — Who it belongs to The front page, filled in once Two — The log Two sheets, one line a night Three — Finished The list of books that got to the end WHY IT IS A BOOK AND NOT A SPREADSHEET Because it lives in the book bag and gets written in by whoever did the listening — sometimes a parent, sometimes a grandparent, sometimes the child. A phone in that moment is a phone that ends the reading. A book on the arm of the sofa takes one line and closes again. WHAT YOU GET Four PDFs, one for each print size: US Letter (8.5 x 11 in) A4 Half-Letter (5.5 x 8.5 in) A5 8 pages each. Print at home or at a print shop, as many times as you like, for as long as you like. Plain paper and a ring binder is the whole kit. Instant download, in your Etsy Purchases the moment payment clears. THE SMALL PRINT Digital download. No physical item is shipped. Colours vary between screens and printers. For personal use. Please do not resell or redistribute the files. A NOTE ON WHAT THIS IS The shortest page in the book, and worth reading first. This is the family's own record of reading at home. It grades nothing and it is not the school's record. What this is. Ruled paper for writing down what happened, when it happened and what it came to — with a date beside it. Nothing in it is computed and nothing in it is advice What this is not. Not a scheme, not an assessment and not a report. It prints no reading level, no band, no colour, no age expectation, no book list and no target, and nothing written in it is scored, marked or compared with anything Why it refuses. Because reading schemes, bands and levels belong to schools, they differ from one school to the next and one country to the next, and they are revised. A level printed here would be the wrong level for almost every child holding the book, and a target printed here would turn ten quiet minutes into a thing to fail at. Whatever the school uses comes from the school. What this book holds is what was actually read, who was there, and what was said about it
