Information about the Calligraphy and the Design of the Art piece
This artwork is written in the calligraphic style of kufi/maqili by certified calligrapher Meryem Osmanlioglu, who is also the owner of this Etsy shop. Meryem got her traditional calligraphy education from renowned masters Fevzi Gunuc and Huseyin Kutlu.
Kufi style is one of the earliest types of Islamic Calligraphy, with the earliest copies of the Qur’an having been written in this style. Maqili is distinguished by sharp corners of the letters, in contrast to occasional curvatures present in the original Kufi. The geometric compusture of Maqili style allows designs that fit well with modern architecture of the 21st century.
This art piece is written in the muthanna (dual) form, where the text is written in mirrored form. The phrase “mashaAllah” is written at the bottom from right to left, and written at the top upside down from left to right. Artist has rendered the letters “meem” and “ha” in the same form at the beginning and end, which alludes to another mirroring within each line as well. The design also reminds of the architectural structures of mosques with the “meem” and “ha” at both ends resembling minarets.
