Padshahnama Shah Jahan and His Sons, Mughal Durbar Wall Art, Indian Miniature Court Scene, Framed Indian Royal Art Print

Shah Jahan receives his three eldest sons and Asaf Khan - Plate 10 of the Padshahnama, the official chronicle of the emperor's reign. ABOUT THE MANUSCRIPT The Padshahnama is the most lavish record the Mughal court ever produced of itself: a chronicle written to be read by posterity and illustrated by the finest painters in the imperial workshop. Durbar scenes like this one are group portraiture at its most demanding - every face in the ranked assembly individual and recognisable, the whole held in a strict architectural order, the emperor raised at its centre. Asaf Khan, shown here, was Shah Jahan's father-in-law and the brother of Nur Jahan - one of the most powerful men at court.
