Description
Twelve months off, and by the following autumn the honest answer to what you did with it is a shrug and three things that all happened in the same fortnight.
A year away is long and mostly quiet, and quiet does not stick — which is why so many people come out of one feeling vaguely that they wasted it, when they did not. A line a month and a line on the days that had something in them is enough to hold it: where you were, what the month held, what you were reading, what changed. There is no target in this book, no milestone, nothing to total and no page that asks how the year is going. It is a record of it, kept while it happens.
AWAY is 10 pages of plain, ruled paper for exactly that. What you set down and who you told, the months as they went, the days you will not otherwise remember, what you were reading, and what you are taking back — with nothing in it that asks what you have to show for it.
THE FOUR PAGES THAT PAY FOR IT
A line a month, for the whole year. Where you were, what the month held and what changed. The spine of the book, and about a minute's work.
The days that had something in them. Not every day. The ones you would otherwise lose entirely, written down while you still know the details.
What you read, watched and learned. A year off is mostly this, and it is the first thing to go. What it was, where it came from, what stayed.
Nothing that measures the year. No target, no milestone, no budget, nothing totalled and no page anywhere asking what you have to show for it.
WHAT IS INSIDE
One — The year What you set down, and who knows
Two — Before The first fortnight, written while it is true
Three — The months A line at the end of each
Four — The days Only the ones with something in them
Five — Read What it was and what stayed
Six — At the end What the year actually was
WHY IT IS A BOOK AND NOT A SPREADSHEET
Because the point of the year is that nothing is being managed, and a spreadsheet cannot help turning a quiet Tuesday into an entry that ought to justify itself. Paper does not do that. It also gets filled in on trains, in borrowed kitchens and in the middle of afternoons, which is most of where the year actually happens, and it comes out of a drawer years later still legible.

A NOTE ON WHAT THIS IS
The shortest page in the book, and worth reading first.
This is a journal for a year away from work, kept by the person taking it.
What this is. Ruled paper for writing down what happened, when it happened and who it involved — with a date beside it. Nothing in it is computed and nothing in it is advice
What this is not. Not a plan, not a budget, not a productivity system and not a career guide. There is nothing in it to be totalled, no target, no milestone, no measure of whether the year is going well and no page that asks what you have to show for it. It gives no advice about money, employment, pensions, tax or going back, and it holds no view at all about what a year like this is for
Why it refuses. Because the whole difficulty of a year away is the quiet suspicion that it ought to be producing something, and a printable with a progress page would make that worse every single time you opened it. A year is long, and most of what happens in it is small and gone by the following spring. A line a month, the days as they went and what you were reading is enough to hold it. Whether it was worth it is a question for later, and it is not one this book asks
