Description
The emperor Shah Jahan rides in profile, attributed to Payag - one of the finest painters of the imperial studio and a master of the horse in motion.
ABOUT THE SITTER
Shah Jahan reigned from 1628 to 1658, the years usually reckoned the high point of Mughal art and architecture. He built the Taj Mahal for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, the Red Fort at Delhi, and the Peacock Throne. The equestrian portrait was among the forms his studio used to state sovereignty: the ruler mounted, calm, in perfect command.
ABOUT THE PAINTING
Attributed to Payag, c. 1630. Payag was celebrated for night scenes and for the weight and modelling he gave to animals and armour - qualities visible here in the horse's musculature and the fall of the emperor's robe.
