Description
A genuinely beautiful copy — Franklin Library's Signed First Edition Society printing of Amy Tan's The Kitchen God's Wife (1991), her celebrated second novel following The Joy Luck Club.
Bound in vivid red full leather with elaborate 22kt gold gilt tooling on the front and rear boards — Chinese cranes in flight among stylized clouds and waves, framed in a triple gilt border. The spine carries five raised bands with matching gilt crane and cloud motifs, gilt-lettered "Signed First Edition / The Kitchen God's Wife / Amy Tan / The Franklin Library." All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers in deep plum, gold, and rust tones. Satin ribbon page marker.
Personally signed by Amy Tan on the limitation page, which reads: "This limited, leather-bound edition has been privately printed and personally signed by the author, exclusively for The Signed First Edition Society."
The edition includes a specially commissioned color frontispiece by artist Joyce Patti (a hand poised with chopsticks against a cloud-filled sky, in an ornate floral gilt border) and recurring crane vignettes opening each chapter. Per the colophon: set in Times Roman, display face Present Script, binding design by Martha Phillips, printed on 60-lb Franklin Library Olde Style Cream acid-free paper by S. D. Warren Co., printed by R. R. Donnelley & Sons of Chicago, Smyth-sewn and bound in top-grain leather.
Condition: Near Fine. Gilt is bright and unrubbed on both boards and spine, corners are sharp, binding is tight, and the text block is clean throughout with no foxing noted. A striking, shelf-ready copy of a modern bestseller in its finest published form.
A wonderful piece for collectors of signed literary firsts, Franklin Library bindings, or anyone building an Asian-motif or dark-academia library shelf.
