This is a pair of small firm joint outside callipers by Moore and Wright. I have cleaned them and removed the surface rust and they are ready to work. Moore and Wright were an absolute titan of tool manufacture specialising in particular in precision measurement tools for the engineering industry. They started work in the early part of the 20th century and continued until 1972 when they were bought out by tool making conglomerate. but you can tell when you are handling an M and W tool because the quality in the manufacturer comes across. There is that bit more metal in tool and the joints are that it more substantial. If looked after they go on almost indefinitely. This pair were made before the manufacturer moved over to making callipers out of stainless steel. This happened in the early 1960s so I think that this tool was made probably in the 1950s. there was a substantial coating of surface rust When they arrived in my workshop And I have removed that leaving a Patinated and matte finish. The manufacturer's stamp is, however, still visible. the joint is stiff enough so that it will hold its position when the tool is set but not so stiff that you need large muscles to use it. the arms are straight and the tips Meet as they should.
