Description
This charming small viola would be a very nice choice for the diminutive violist or a violinist who wants an easy transition to the alto voice.
We estimate that this viola was made about 1900. The label reads:
"Copie de
F. Breton, Brevete de S. M. G.
M La Duchesse d'Angouleme
a Mirecourt 1824"
The top is from two bookmatched pieces of spruce with broad grain, and the single-piece back is from nicely figured maple. The ribs match the back, and the neck and scroll were made from less figured maple. The hand inlaid purfle is neatly done and has no replacements or repairs. The only repair visible is a well done button replacement on the back. Overall the viola is in very good shape and stable.
Body Length: 382mm or 15 inches
String Length : 364mm
Upper Bouts: 179mm
Middle Bouts: 115mm
Lower Bouts: 215mm
The tone of this viola is typical of smaller violas, without the breadth of larger instruments, however it is a pleasing woody tone that does not have the tense overtones that some small violas produce. Response is very good throughout the range. If you are looking for a small viola that sounds better than its price, this one is for you!
