==== Vesper, the humanist cat. ==== Hi, dear redditors! I’m a cat illustrator, and this year I want to start with an illustration that was commissioned to me at the end of last year. The client asked me for a portrait of his old cat “Vesper” in a classical style. My customer was fond of classical texts, so I decided to insert the cat in a renaissance context. Did you know that Renaissance is the only time period of Italy whose greatest experts are not Italians but Americans? This is a little trivia for you. Italian Renaissance was a time of breakage with the previous medieval tradition, and a time in which Europe as a whole renewed a lost interest for classical texts. Although Humanism started to fluorish towards the end of the middle ages, one of its most famous motto “Nani Gigantum Humeris Insidentes” (Dwarfs sitting on the shoulders of giants), was adopted throughout the renaissance period as a jest of humility in regard to the ancient masters, on top of which the humanist considered himself to be a mere dwarf sitting on top of their knowledge. Little they know that this change of mentality would eventually bring to the disappointment for this ancient knowledge, and to the fluorishing of modern science in Europe. The simbology in the artwork is quite clear, a candle is litting up the classical texts, like the Almagest and the Iliad, while religious texts ad overshadowed. In the sky you can barely make out Jupiter with its galilean moons, showing the rise of new stars and a new mentality over the world.
