Description

This listing is for a collection of three late Victorian household health books dating to the late 1880s. Unlike professional physician reference texts, these volumes were written for ordinary families, bringing medical knowledge, child care, nutrition, and practical health advice into the American home. Together they offer a fascinating snapshot of how families were encouraged to understand disease, hygiene, childhood development, and everyday health during a period of tremendous change in American medicine. Included in this collection: • Pathfinder Child's Health Primer Published by American Book Company. This late-1880s edition carries an 1885 copyright by A. S. Barnes & Co. and includes an endorsement page dated 1889. A smaller-format volume with an attractive decorative binding and numerous illustrations. • Edwin Hale's Compendium of Health, Volume I (1887) Published by American Book Company. An extensively illustrated household medical reference featuring a classical frontispiece titled Medicine, a beautiful color plate of a mother and child, additional full-page illustrations, and numerous engravings throughout. • Dr. Pierce's Common Sense Medical Advisor (Sixteenth Edition, 1887) Bound in its practical everyday leather binding rather than a deluxe presentation edition. This classic household medical guide contains four full-page color plates along with many additional illustrations throughout. These books were working household references and remain complete examples showing honest evidence of long use. The Pathfinder Primer has the strongest exterior presentation of the group. The two larger volumes exhibit significant exterior wear consistent with decades of handling. Hale's Compendium of Health has a separated binding with detached covers and front board, all present with the volume. Dr. Pierce also shows substantial age-related wear. Both remain complete and display well as historical reference books. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description. These books reflect the medical knowledge, terminology, and social attitudes of the late nineteenth century. Readers will encounter historical medical theories and language concerning health, disability, mental illness, childhood development, and other topics that are outdated and may be considered offensive by modern standards. They are offered as authentic historical documents illustrating the evolution of family health education and everyday medical understanding.
