Description
Step into the crowded streets, workshops and gathering rebellion of colonial Boston with Johnny Tremain, Esther Forbes’ enduring story of a young apprentice who finds himself swept into the events that would ignite the American Revolution.
First published in 1943 and winner of the Newbery Medal, Johnny Tremain follows a young Boston silversmith’s apprentice whose life changes dramatically just as tensions between the American colonies and Great Britain are reaching the breaking point. His story becomes intertwined with the Sons of Liberty and historical figures including John Hancock, Samuel Adams and Paul Revere, carrying the reader from everyday life in colonial Boston toward the Boston Tea Party and the opening battles of the Revolution.
This vintage Laurel-Leaf Historical Fiction paperback edition has particularly great period cover art, depicting Johnny against a backdrop of British troops and colonial Boston. The Newbery Award Medal Winner emblem appears prominently at the upper corner.
The copyright page carries a January 1969 edition date, although the number line indicates this copy is a later printing of that edition. Published by Dell Publishing, a division of Bantam Doubleday Dell.
An interesting Massachusetts connection appears inside as well: Forbes left the royalties from her works to the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, Massachusetts, where she had conducted much of her historical research.
The book shows vintage age and use, including light cover wear, edge and corner wear, surface marks and expected toning to the pages. The binding appears intact in the photographs. Please review all photos for the best assessment of condition.
A great vintage copy for a collector of American history, Revolutionary War books, Newbery winners, vintage children's literature, historical fiction, colonial Boston memorabilia or classic school reading. It would also make a fun addition to a Revolutionary War or Americana display.
