Description

This is a vintage Florida citrus crate label from Florigold Groves, Indian River Associates Incorporated, Vero Beach, Florida, circa 1930’s. It has the image of a Native American head on a gold coin. This paper advertising label measures 9 inches x 9 inches. This is an ORIGINAL vintage citrus crate label, not a reprint or reproduction. It is scarce and hard to find. These labels were used for advertising and were pasted on the ends of wooden crates, which were used to pack oranges, lemons, and other fruits and vegetables. These colorful crates were shipped nationwide via the railway system to be sold in the local markets. Packers and growers would order labels from printing companies that specialized in this type of work. The commercial artists who created these labels were not paid well and usually did not receive any credit for what they created. During WWII commodity rationing and shortages led to the end of labels for commercial use. Instead, cardboard boxes were adapted to ship these commodities. By the 1950s the use of labels was almost completely phased out. Per the internet: Vintage Florigold Groves labels from Vero Beach, Florida, are iconic pieces of Florida citrus history, often featuring bright graphics like Native American figures or bathing beauties, used by groups like Indian River Associates/Exchange Packers around the 1930s to market Indian River fruit, showcasing vibrant art for commercial advertising that's now collected. These collectible crate labels, featuring themes like "Flo," an Indian brave on a gold coin, or general Indian River imagery, highlight the region's citrus boom and are available at places like the Indian River Citrus Museum. CONDITION: This label is in very good vintage condition, with some light edge wear, which is not uncommon to these commercial advertising labels. Overall, it is a clean example. This is a vintage item and has been gently used. I have done my best to describe it, but it is possible that a small defect could have escaped my notice.
