Description

Vintage Yemeni Ma'shouqa Silver Necklace – Hadramaut Coral & Amulet Necklace – Traditional Yemen Jewelry – 75 g A beautiful and distinctive traditional Ma'shouqa (معشوقة) necklace, associated with the Hadramaut region of Yemen. The necklace combines silver amulet elements, old coral beads and numerous finely worked silver beads. Its central feature is a rectangular silver amulet box decorated with a raised floral motif, accompanied by several cylindrical amulet containers and richly detailed silver elements. In Yemeni jewelry, silver necklaces with amulet cases and coral were traditionally connected with protection, status and important stages in a woman's life. Museum examples document necklaces of this general family being given to girls around marriage age and worn for weddings and festive occasions. The silver amulet forms also show a visual relationship with Indian jewelry traditions. This is consistent with the long-standing trade links between Yemen, the Indian subcontinent and East Africa, which strongly influenced Yemeni decorative arts. A particularly beautiful traditional jewel, rich in history and presence. 🔴 Materials & Craftsmanship Silver (tested high grade) Old coral beads Numerous small handmade silver beads Central rectangular silver amulet box Several cylindrical silver amulet containers Applied and repoussé-style decoration Traditional handmade construction The necklace combines different forms of amuletic silverwork. The cylindrical containers are reminiscent of hirz, protective amulet cases traditionally used to hold written prayers or protective texts. Comparable Yemeni silver necklaces with amulet cases are preserved in major museum collections. The coral beads show attractive natural irregularities and a soft patina consistent with age and use. The original necklace has been extended on both sides with a silver chain, giving it a more comfortable contemporary length and a beautiful drape when worn. 🟢 Measurements & Weight Total weight: 75 g Central amulet box: approximately 5 cm / 1.97 in long Width of central amulet box: approximately 3.1 cm / 1.22 in The added silver chain on each side extends the traditional beaded section and makes the necklace easier to wear. 🔵 Geographic Origin Hadramaut region, Yemen Traditionally known as a Ma'shouqa necklace, this type belongs to the rich tradition of southern Yemeni silver jewelry. Comparable necklaces combining silver, coral and amulet containers are generally dated from the late 19th to the first half of the 20th century. A closely related necklace attributed to Hadramaut has been dated to the early 20th century, although regional attributions can sometimes vary between Hadramaut, al-Jawf and Marib. For this necklace, I would conservatively describe the traditional components as probably first half to mid-20th century. 🟣 Condition Very good vintage condition with natural patina and signs of age and traditional use. The coral beads display variations in color, shape and surface that are characteristic of old natural material. The silver retains a beautiful aged surface. Small irregularities and traces of wear are consistent with the handmade nature and history of the necklace. The silver chain extensions are later additions, designed to improve the fit without altering the character of the original necklace. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description. 🟠 How to Wear / Today Despite its traditional origin, this necklace has a remarkably contemporary presence. The combination of warm orange-red coral and sculptural silver creates a strong, luminous contrast. It can be worn as a statement necklace, particularly with simple linen, black, white or indigo clothing. The added silver chain makes it easier to wear while preserving the visual impact of the traditional front section. 🟤 Ethical & Preloved Jewelry This is an authentic vintage jewel with its own history, craftsmanship and patina. Choosing antique and vintage jewelry means preserving existing materials and traditional techniques rather than relying on newly manufactured pieces. A special choice for collectors of preloved jewelry, ethical jewelry, Yemeni silver and traditional Middle Eastern adornment. ⚫ Shipping Information Carefully packed and shipped from France by tracked Colissimo.
